The Hero and the Quest
My collage on Cry, The Beloved Country I did the theme The Hero and the Quest. I picked Rev. Stephen Kumalo as the hero in my theme. Kumalo’s quest was to search for his family and bring them back home. The Umfundisi had a lot of courage for an aged man to wander the dangerous city Johannesburg alone. He was determined to go along with his journey.
The theme The Hero and the Quest goes with my collage. The Umfundisi played the hero by going to Johannesburg to save his sick sister Gertrude and her son. On the way, he wanted to find his lost son Absalom that went to Johannesburg and never heard from him since. What Kumalo is going to find the unexpected? He searches for his sister and her son and sees she was married to many men. Gertrude’s son is not in school but indeed in the streets stealing. The Umfundisi looks for Absalom at the school he attended for abandoned children. He finds out he has his girlfriend with child. Then, he finds Absalom in jail for killing a white man named “Arthur Jarvis.” He decides to take Gertrude, her son, and the woman with child back to Ndotsheni. The Umfundisi had to be strong for them even though his son was guilty and sentenced death by hanged. Before that he married his son and his girlfriend. He went to make peace with Mr. Jarvis. He went back home with Absalom’s wife and Gertrude’s son. Gertrude had disappeared that morning. She was determined to be a nun. The faith of his son was a secret.
In my collage it shows what went on step by step the main points. How Kumalo helped and sacrificed to get to the end of his journey. My collage relates to the theme in many ways that had been explained. The theme was expressed in the novel how Kumalo’s courage, strength, and his braveness help him through his journey in Johannesburg even though it took a loved one away. It was also expressed by the emotional effect and the pain. I think I have done a pretty good collage from my theme and how I showed feeling to my collage.

Aspects of War
I chose the theme Aspects of War on the story of Cry, The Beloved country .My theme it represents my collage on the war of blacks vs. whites .It all began when the whites invaded south Africa. They build a government to take power and knowing that the Africans were uncivilized and where not use to living the city life. In my collage I express the different life style of the blacks and whites.
The blacks had to live the style of poor and hardly had any money. Otherwise, the whites have money, transportation and all the needs they wanted. The white people were dependent on the blacks for their labor and sweat. It seam like war in Johannesburg because the black people started to kill and rob for there own good.
They made it an unsafe environment where you been afraid to enter. Once people enter Johannesburg, people never returned. I think it was not a great idea for the whites to go to Johannesburg because of the blacks and how they see lots of crime going on and they should of stayed where they started. On the other side it was good for them to move in so the blacks did not suffer for hunger but you will never know if they tried to abused from the blacks.
“Cry the Beloved, Country”, is one of the most touching stories I have ever read. The story is full of emotions, different aspects, and most important difficult situations. This poster is a demonstration of these hardships; it is about the situations that are hard to understand, with different people, their mistakes, and about second chances. Kumalo is a priest, whose heart was pure and full of ideas, and challenges to come his way. He was a priest in the city of Ndotsheni, where he had a wife and had made a life. The city of Ndotsheni where he called home was going through dry climate, decreasing of food supply, and loosing hope. A hard challenge for Kumalo, and for the native people of that city who were hopeless and weren’t aware of the consequences because of these natural causes. In this, story Kumalo had son who he had not seen in years. One day he had received a letter from the city of Sophiatown, Johannesburg, in that letter he had been informed that he’s sister was very ill and was to go to Johannesburg immediately, so he took this opportunity to look for his son as well. As Kumalo had arrived Johannesburg, he made friends. He also found his sister, but it was no good news to him, what he had found was horrible, and it shamed him. Gertrude had been prostituting, and was doing dirty work for money. She also had a child, Kumalo not only as a priest but also as a brother gave Gertrude an opportunity to change and leave Johannesburg with her child to Ndotsheni. In search of his son, Kumalo also had found information on his son. He had found out he had killed a man, he was convicted to be hanged. Absalom who was Kumalos son, had regret what he had done, and if he would take it back, he would. “Cry the Beloved, Country”, is a story about hope, difficulties, and second chances. Different situations make people understand things, making you ask questions, and making you become a hopeful person.
On the eight day of October, 1946 there was a murder and the victim was named Arthur Trevelyan Jarvis in Parkwold. The person who murder him was named Absalom Kumalo and two has accomplices were Mathew Kumalo and Johannes Pafuri. Absalom was found guilty during his trial. The other two were set free. The three things that Absalom was accused of was buying a gun from a stranger, he had the gun in his hand just to frightened the guy in Absalom point of view, and shot the man than buried the revolver. The first argument in the court was when he bought the gun from a stranger, didn’t know his name and didn’t know where he lived. The only reason he says that he bought the gun was for only self defense because he heard Johannesburg was a dangerous place. Moreover, he would only use the gun if only someone were only to shoot at him so he trained to see if he could control the revolver by shooting the tree. The judge’s point of view was that he bought the gun to get ready for the murder and training to kill the man by shooting the tree. The second argument in the court was that the day of the murder Absalom Kumalo had the gun in his hand. But Absalom point of view was holding the gun at his hand only to frighten the guy. Than the Judge noticed that the gun was loaded. Then they said that the gun does not need to be loaded to frighten the guy. So Absalom did not have an answer to that question. So the Judge’s point of view is that he meant to kill the man. The third argument was that Absalom shot the man than buried the revolver. To the Judge, it shows that he meant to kill the white man and buried the revolver in order to not get caught. Absalom agrees about burying the revolver for not getting caught. But he does not agree that he meant to kill the white man, his point of view that he was afraid and did not meant to shoot at white man. I believe Absalom was unfairly punished. The reason I think he was not punish well is because they let Johannes Pafuri and Mathew Kumalo free wit accordingly discharged. But they were part of the murder and the robbery. I believe they should’ve got some time in jail and not letting them free. But the killer, which is Absalom got a sentenced of hanging him until he dies and I believe that he should got a sentenced in prison.
My poster board is about the court scene in cry the beloved country. I placed many items that would symbolize what I am trying to show. I also tried to be artistic about what I am making because its called Cry the Beloved Country I put many country themed items on the board. I made sure to put only what I new would be the best to put on this board. In the story Kumalo is getting the death sentence so he is going to be hung.
I placed the gun as the item that was use to commit the crime. I used a picture of an old court to show what it looked like in the old days. Even with having personal feeling about hanging ropes I have placed them on my board as well. I have even put what old jail cells you would to stay in. I also put a picture from the story on the board.
I say the biggest thing on my board is the eye I drew by hand. I made that to symbolize the crying in the story because of every thing that is happening. From loosing your parents to loosing your life because of a bad accident. I think that this story was a perfect story to read when u have free time. This is 1 of the best I have ever read.
Paola: I really liked your presentation and I get to see you present it too. Either way its going to be good. I like the way you expressed yourself in the presentation about Kumalo's pain. Indeed he has suffered and had hope during the bad times. He has a grandson on the way that he keeps him motivated after a terrible lost. Sometimes you just have to have faith. Great job!!!!
augustin your story does reflect on how people at the time were racist, and how war was making natives live in a poor enviromnet and how people became hopeless.
Larry: You make me laugh. It was good but you confused the names. There are three other men named Kumalo because that is a last name not a first name. We don't know who your addressing too. You should pay more attention to the story. Good presentation.
my collage is for unit 10 is based on the power or pain and love. I have alot of pictures describes what the pain of love do you, as well as drawings with colors. i chose this topic because i know people can relate to it.
My Project Jelani DeBerry Eng.2b unit 10 05/27/10 My project is based on the changes in life unit in my packet. On this poster, you will see how I compared blacks and whites working versus them working against each other. You will also see that I compared the dry lands in the country versus the healthy crops. All of these comparisons have to do with the story I jus read. Cry the Beloved Country. By Alan Paton. Through this story, there are many changes. When Kumalo moves from Africa to Johannesburg to find his son and sister. The whole story is very ironic. Because it took a black person to kill a white person for the unity to form between them. The man Kumalo also makes a drastic change. He goes from not speaking to his wife to showing her all of his emotions. At the end when he finally meets the father of the man his son killed he is so grateful that the man forgives him for what his son did. Then he realizes that it wasn’t the death of Mr.Jarivs’ son that killed his wife. She was already ill. So the man Mr.Jarvis realized also that the land the Afrikaans lived on was growing more and more dry with no water. So they team up and get the land all fixed up. And build the church his wife asked for before she passed.
